Custom Wine Walls in San Marcos

San Marcos Wine Cellars designs custom wine walls in San Marcos: reach-in bottle storage built into kitchen cabinetry or along a dining-room wall, closed by insulated glass doors and chilled by a small system of its own. Nobody walks in; the entire cellar is a sealed cabinet one or two bottles deep.

Wine walls fit homes with no spare room or closet to give up. We build them in San Marcos and in Kyle, Buda, Wimberley, New Braunfels and Martindale.

Climate-controlled wine walls

The cooled version is a miniature cellar: an insulated box behind insulated glass doors, sealed at every joint, with a cooling system supplying air through a grille in the header. It holds long-term bottles at cellar conditions while staying part of the furniture.

Display wine walls without cooling

Open racking on a wall shows bottles beautifully but follows the room temperature. Wine Spectator places the ideal range at 45–65°F and warns that storage above 70°F ages wine too quickly, so an uncooled wall is for bottles to drink in the near term.

Kitchen and dining-room wine walls

Built into cabinetry beside a pantry or across a dining-room wall, a wine wall shares space with heat sources. Ovens, cooktops and sunny windows nearby add to the heat load, so their positions are part of the design.

Racking for wine walls

Pegs that tilt bottles label-forward, wooden slots that hold them side by side, or a combination, plus a shelf or two for magnums. Weight adds up fast once a wall is full, so racks are fixed into studs or blocking added behind the finish, never into drywall alone.

Cooling a wine wall

The enclosed volume is small, but a self-contained unit beside the dining table would blow heat and noise into the room. Ducted or split systems keep the condenser elsewhere, outdoors or in a utility space, and bring only conditioned air to the wall. Power follows the chosen unit’s manual, a dedicated circuit for some makers and a grounded outlet of adequate capacity for others, and the condensate needs a route out.

Wine wall vs wine fridge

A freestanding wine cooler is an appliance that holds a steady temperature, sometimes set for serving; Wine Spectator distinguishes it from a cellar, which keeps wine near 55°F with humidity control for long-term aging. A built-in wine wall is closer to the cellar, sized to the space and the collection, though it involves construction. For long storage, the wall is the better match.

In San Marcos the outdoor condenser of a split system faces afternoon heat: the average August high is 96.8°F. CellarPro rates its 1800-series units to 95°F ambient, while WhisperKOOL rates its ceiling-mount split to 110°F, so the condenser’s rating, shade and placement are chosen with local highs in mind.

Permits for wine walls

A plug-in cooling unit and cabinetry may need no permit, but new circuits and split systems are trade work. San Marcos uses a single trade permit application for electrical, plumbing and mechanical work, and the mechanical applicant must be a state-licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractor or exempt under state law; the Permit Requirement Determination form settles unclear cases.

Frequently asked questions

How is a wine wall different from a walk-in cellar?

A wine wall is reach-in: bottles sit one or two deep behind doors in a shallow cooled cabinet. A walk-in cellar is a room you enter.

Does a wine wall need cooling?

For long-term storage, yes. An open display wall follows the room temperature and suits wine you plan to open within months.

Can a wine wall go in a kitchen?

Yes, with the cooling sized for nearby heat sources such as ovens and cooktops, and with the condenser kept out of the kitchen.
